Gaples Institute Receives Gold in Digital Health Awards for Innovative Graphic-Novel-Themed Nutrition Course for Young Adults

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Deerfield, IL — The educational nonprofit Gaples Institute is delighted to share the exciting news that it has received the Gold Award—the highest honor—in the Fall 2023 Digital Health Awards. The award was bestowed on the Gaples Institute’s innovative new online nutrition course for young people, “Using Food as a Superpower.”

The competition recognizes the world’s best new digital health resources each year. The Gaples Institute’s winning entry was the top prizewinner in the category of “Interactive Content/Rich Media.” Winners in other categories included such distinguished health leaders as Hopkins Medicine, the American Heart Association, AARP, and Mayo Clinic.

Critical Acclaim from Young Adults and World Nutrition Experts

Launched just weeks ago, the interactive course on the superpowers of healthy food has received an overwhelmingly enthusiastic reception, perhaps the only nutrition education resource to garner accolades from both a Harvard Professor of Pediatrics and a 14-year-old.

Designed with a graphic-novel-style interface, the course has been eagerly received not only by student learners, but also among educators and pediatric practices. Using Food as a Superpower is intended for all audiences but is especially relevant for learners from middle school through early adulthood.

Empowering Teens and Young Adults to Achieve Health Goals They Care About

“We know that building a strong foundation of nutrition knowledge in young minds is crucial for the health of the rising generation—but we also know that young learners aren’t necessarily concerned about things like heart disease or high blood pressure,” said Gaples Institute Executive Director Dr. Stephen Devries. “That’s why the course shows how healthy food helps unlock the physical and mental benefits that specifically resonate with young people”—such as athletic excellence, positive mood, school success, restful sleep, dynamic energy, and more.

“We also made the learning experience not only scientifically sound, but fun!” he explained. “The comic-book design, combined with frequent and meaningful interactivity, captures learners’ attention and keeps them engaged. No boring lectures or passive videos here! And all supported by clickable references to the original literature.”

“We’re so honored to receive the top honor in this year’s Digital Health Awards,” Dr. Devries added, but even more important, we are grateful to provide a tool that empowers young people to lead healthier, happier, longer lives.”
